How the Romans Invented Apartment Living
Original: How the Romans Invented Apartment Living. It Was Brilliant, Brutal, and Often Deadly
Ancient Rome's insulae — multi-storey apartment blocks that housed most of the city's population — are being highlighted as the world's first mass apartment living. The blocks were an efficient answer to dense urban housing, but they were poorly built, prone to collapse and fire, and often deadly for the poorer residents who lived on the upper floors. Writers are drawing attention to both the ingenuity and the dangers of this early form of high-density housing.
Why now: Interest in ancient Roman urban housing and its parallels with modern apartment living and housing density debates.
