Fish Sperm Found Chasing Eggs Inside Living Mussels
Original: Sperm Still Chase Eggs in a Fish That Fertilises Inside a Living Mussel
Researchers report that in a fish species that fertilises its eggs inside a living mussel, sperm still actively seek out eggs. The finding shows that sperm-egg chemoattraction persists even in an unusual internal fertilisation setting within another animal, offering new insight into how fertilisation mechanisms work in extreme environments.
Why now: It is a surprising biological discovery that challenges assumptions about how fertilisation works in unusual settings.
