China to send pandas to America, Xi Jinping announces
Original: China to give Pandas to America, announces Chinese President Xi Jinping
Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced that China will send pandas to the United States. The announcement revives China's long-running practice of panda diplomacy, which had paused as Chinese-American relations cooled. No details have been given yet on how many pandas will go or which US zoos will receive them.
Why now: Panda loans are a high-profile symbol of improving US-China relations, making the announcement major diplomatic news.
