Original: Heute vor 81 Jahren wurden die Vereinten Nationen gegründet – als Antwort auf Krieg, Faschismus und Zerstörung. Ihr Ziel
Commemorations and commentary mark the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, established in 1945 in response to war, fascism and destruction. Speakers note the organisation's founding aim of resolving conflicts diplomatically and securing world peace, but argue that ongoing wars, violence and genocides show those goals remain unmet.
Why now: The anniversary of the UN's founding prompts reflection on whether it has fulfilled its mission of securing world peace.
