UN independent experts say the fate of many North Koreans forcibly returned from China remains unknown, three years after the reported resumption of large-scale deportations of DPRK nationals. They express serious concerns that those returned may face arbitrary detention, torture or other mistreatment upon arrival, and are urging China and North Korea to provide information and ensure the returnees' safety and rights are protected.
Why now: A UN warning has drawn attention to the ongoing plight of North Korean deportees three years after mass returns resumed.
