The U.S. Bureau of Land Management's annual Bat Beauty Contest runs from October 24 through Halloween. Wildlife technicians photograph wild bats on public lands, and the public votes for winners on social media. Contestants carry punny names such as 'Hoary Potter', and the lighthearted event is drawing amused attention while highlighting bat conservation on public lands.

Why now: The contest's Halloween timing and pun-named bat contestants make it a fun, shareable seasonal story.
