Archbishop tells Spain's Senate he engages in politics
Original: Archbishop to Spain’s Senate: ‘I engage in politics whenever I can’
An archbishop addressed Spain's Senate, declaring that he engages in politics whenever he can. The remarks came in an appearance before the upper chamber, drawing attention to the blurring line between church leadership and political life in Spain. The blunt admission from a senior Catholic figure is likely to fuel debate over the role of religious authorities in the country's public and legislative affairs.
Why now: A senior Catholic figure openly acknowledging political involvement before a national legislature is unusual and sparks church-state debate
