Kate Beaton's Charles Babbage comic recirculates amid AI debate
Original: "I can't abide sloppy math!" - Charles Babbage (father of the computer) to Georgiana. From " Hark! A Vagrant " webcomics
A 2014 'Hark! A Vagrant' webcomic by Kate Beaton, showing computer pioneer Charles Babbage telling Georgiana 'I can't abide sloppy math!', is being shared again online. Readers are invoking the Victorian mathematician's famed impatience with calculation errors to comment on today's AI tools, which are often criticised for producing confident but wrong answers.
Why now: People are using Babbage's complaint about sloppy math as a wry commentary on AI's tendency to make computational mistakes.
