New radiocarbon dates rewrite Inca history
Original: Bonanza of new dates rewrites the history of the Inca
A wave of new radiocarbon dating is prompting archaeologists to revise the timeline of the Inca Empire, suggesting its rise and expansion unfolded differently than long assumed. Researchers say the revised chronology changes how quickly the empire grew and how its early political development is understood, with implications for the broader history of the Andes before the Spanish conquest.
Why now: Fresh scientific dating evidence is challenging established accounts of how and when the Inca Empire rose.
