The European Union has presented a new Arctic strategy that maintains its commitment to keeping fossil fuels in the ground, while stepping up protection of undersea cables and strengthening security in the region. The plan ties climate and sustainable development goals to growing strategic concerns over infrastructure vulnerabilities and geopolitical competition in the far north, drawing attention across European policy circles.
Why now: Rising security concerns over Arctic infrastructure and Russia-related tensions have put EU northern policy back in focus.
