Perplexity has added a local-first mode to its Mac app that allows its Computer feature to run entirely on the device, including carrying out tasks without an internet connection. The change means users can keep working with the assistant offline, with processing handled locally rather than in the cloud. The move reflects a broader push among AI companies toward on-device, privacy-friendly operation.

Why now: Offline, on-device AI capability is a notable shift for an assistant that previously relied on cloud processing, drawing interest about privacy and performance.
