Keep Growing Detroit reports that 3,277 farms and gardens were active across Detroit as of September 2026. The nonprofit says the number has grown steadily over several decades, making the city nationally known as a leader in urban farming. Observers point to the movement as a model for how post-industrial cities can repurpose vacant land for food production and community use.

Why now: Detroit's urban farming movement keeps setting a national example for revitalising vacant land, drawing renewed attention to its growth.
