An electronics hobbyist turned a SK hynix 2x16GB DDR5-5600 SODIMM kit, bought for $120 on Facebook Marketplace, into a DDR5-7800 desktop memory kit. The modification comes as soaring memory prices have made desktop RAM kits that would normally sell for around $1000 far harder to afford, and the workaround is drawing attention from PC builders dealing with the ongoing RAM price surge.

Why now: RAM prices have spiked sharply, so a cheap DIY conversion bypassing the crisis is striking a chord with PC builders.
