Callinicos: Ukraine crisis exposes Europe's reliance on US power
Original: Alex Callinicos: Ukraine crisis shows Europe’s leaders’ dependence on US empire https:// lemmy.world/post/53383677
Marxist theorist Alex Callinicos argues the Ukraine crisis demonstrates that European leaders remain fundamentally dependent on the United States. In his view, European governments have followed Washington's lead on sanctions, defence and diplomacy toward Russia rather than pursuing an independent foreign policy. The argument feeds into ongoing debate over whether the EU can develop genuine strategic autonomy from the US.
Why now: Europe's continued alignment with US policy on Ukraine remains a contested topic as calls for European strategic autonomy grow.
