On October 20, 1980, presidential candidate Ronald Reagan wrote to PATCO President Robert Poli, promising that if the air traffic controllers union endorsed him he would take whatever steps necessary to provide the most modern equipment and support their needs. PATCO endorsed Reagan, but in 1981 he fired more than 11,000 striking controllers, a move that became a landmark in the decline of US union power.
Why now: The anniversary of Reagan's promise to PATCO is being recalled because it contrasts sharply with his decision to fire the union's striking members a year later.
