Mathematicians Are The Canary Down The AI Coal Mine
A science discussion is drawing large attention to the idea that mathematicians are the first professionals to feel the impact of advanced AI systems. The argument suggests that because AI tools have made rapid progress on mathematical reasoning problems, the fate of mathematics as a profession signals what may soon happen across other knowledge work, including research, engineering and analysis.
Why now: Growing public concern that AI systems capable of solving hard reasoning problems will disrupt expert professions starting with mathematics.
