Stag beetle photographed feeding on dried droppings in Germany

Original: 'Rotes Zeug' # FotoVorschlag ein Balkenschröter Dorcus parallelipipedus https:// de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkensc hr%C3%B6

A German nature photographer shared a close-up of a Balkenschröter (Dorcus parallelipipedus), a lesser stag beetle, feeding on what is described as dried droppings from a berry-eating animal found during walks through floodplain forest. The image was offered as a photo suggestion, and the beetle's unlikely diet is drawing amused interest from wildlife enthusiasts.

Why now: The surprising and slightly gross feeding behavior of the beetle makes for striking wildlife photography.
