Porting video games to VHS tapes, revisited
Original: Porting video games to VHS
Developer Gardiner Bryant explores what it would look like if modern video games were distributed on VHS tapes, a format best known for home movies rather than software. The piece revives an obscure practice from the early 1990s, when some consoles and computers loaded games from videotape, and walks through how the idea could work with today's hardware. Readers are debating whether the nostalgia gimmick has any practical merit.
Why now: The retro-computing concept of loading games from videotape is novel and taps into current nostalgia for obsolete media formats.
