Four Cave-Catfish Populations Documented in Chiapas, Mexico
Researchers have documented four populations of cave-dwelling catfish in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. The finding sheds light on life in subterranean freshwater systems, where species evolve traits like reduced pigmentation and eyesight in permanent darkness. Scientists say the populations could help in studying adaptation and evolution, while highlighting the need to protect fragile cave habitats from human disturbance.
Why now: New documentation of rare cave-adapted fish draws attention to Mexico's understudied subterranean ecosystems.
