A social media user in the United States described daily American political news as feeling like being stuck on Willy Wonka's nightmare boat ride, the surreal and frightening tunnel sequence from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The comment reflects a sense that political events have become chaotic, unsettling and hard to follow.
Why now: Ongoing chaos in US politics is prompting people to compare the daily news cycle to surreal or frightening pop culture moments.
