Paraguay's state power company ANDE and prosecutors seized 18 Bitcoin mining machines in Ciudad del Este after discovering the electricity meter wiring was tampered with on phases 2 and 3. Authorities say the illegal connections involved roughly 319 million guaraníes, about 55,000 dollars, in unpaid power, an offence that can carry prison sentences of up to ten years. The case highlights ongoing electricity theft tied to crypto mining near the Brazilian border.
Why now: The seizure of rigs in a major electricity-theft case near the border is drawing attention to crypto mining's energy costs in Paraguay.
