AI lab offers free home repairs to train robots
Original: AI lab offers free plumbing and HVAC repairs across three cities to train robots
An artificial intelligence lab is providing free plumbing, HVAC, electrical, air duct and carpet cleaning services in three US cities while training robots. Technicians wear sensor rigs that record video of the repair work, and the footage is used to teach robots how to perform household maintenance tasks. The scheme gives residents free skilled labor while giving the lab real-world training data for home robotics.
Why now: The unusual quid pro quo of free home services in exchange for recorded training data is novel and raises both interest and privacy questions.
