Hidden Life in Drinking Water: Groundwater Creatures Defy the Seasons
Original: Hidden Life in Drinking Water: Groundwater Creatures Defy the Seasons, Study Finds
A new study reports that tiny creatures living in groundwater, which can end up in drinking water supplies, do not follow seasonal cycles the way surface organisms do. The finding suggests subterranean ecosystems remain stable year-round, unlike rivers and lakes. Researchers say this challenges assumptions about how groundwater habitats respond to environmental change.
Why now: A new study on unexpected year-round biological activity in groundwater has just been published, drawing attention to a rarely seen ecosystem.
