Former US Secretary of State John Kerry has called for international cooperation to protect Antarctica at the annual CCAMLR meeting, held in Hobart. The talks focus on Antarctic krill fishing limits and proposals for new marine protected area treaties. Kerry's intervention highlights concern that expanding fishing interests are delaying conservation agreements in the Southern Ocean.
Why now: CCAMLR's annual meeting is weighing krill fishing rules and stalled marine protected area proposals, drawing high-profile attention to Antarctic conservation.
