California creates first tribal-led marine protected areas
California has established the state's first tribal-led marine protected areas, giving Native American tribes a leading role in managing and conserving coastal ocean waters. The move marks a shift toward recognising Indigenous stewardship in marine conservation policy, and it is drawing attention as a possible model for how state governments and tribes can share authority over natural resources.
Why now: It is a first-of-its-kind policy in California that recognises tribal leadership in ocean conservation.
