Exile says sister jailed in China for eight years over his speech
Original: China's Transnational Repression: ‘My sister has been in a Chinese prison for eight years because I exercised my freedom
A Chinese exile says his sister has been held in a Chinese prison for eight years, claiming she is being punished for his exercise of free speech abroad. The account is being shared as an example of China's transnational repression, in which authorities allegedly pressure dissidents overseas by targeting family members still in China.
Why now: Renewed attention to allegations that China punishes relatives of dissidents living abroad for their activism.
