GDAL marks 28 years as core open-source geospatial tool

Original: 28 Jahre/years GDAL! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! https:// geoobserver.de/2026/10/19/28-j ahre-gdal-happy-birthday/ @GdalOrg @ EvenRo

The open-source geospatial community is celebrating the 28th birthday of GDAL, the widely used Geospatial Data Abstraction Library. The German geo blog geoObserver published a congratulatory piece crediting the project and long-time maintainer Even Rouault. GDAL underpins countless mapping tools, including QGIS, and remains a cornerstone of free and open-source GIS software worldwide.

Why now: The free and open-source GIS community is marking the anniversary of one of its foundational software libraries.
