Dutch smokers cross border for cheap cigarettes as tax rises bite
Original: sigaret
A lung specialist in the Netherlands has called the growing use of 'tobacco taxis' — people driving across the border to buy cheap cigarettes — heartbreaking, given the health damage smoking causes. The tobacco industry, however, wants an end to the price gap for a different reason: it is pushing shoppers towards the black market and across borders, hurting legitimate sales as Dutch cigarette taxes climb.
Why now: Rising Dutch tobacco taxes are driving smokers to buy cigarettes abroad, sparking debate between health experts and the tobacco industry.
