Indian temples turn to robot elephants in place of live ones
Original: In India's Hindu temples, robots replace live elephants
Hindu temples in India are increasingly using robotic elephants instead of live animals in religious ceremonies and processions. The mechanical elephants can carry out ritual duties such as carrying deities and blessing devotees, while sparing real elephants from captivity and stress. Supporters see the shift as a humane compromise between tradition and animal welfare.
Why now: The use of robotic animals in centuries-old religious rituals is an unusual fusion of technology and faith drawing wide attention.
