Opinion: Trump's 'Humpty Dumpty' approach to human rights
Original: Opinion - Trump’s ‘Humpty Dumpty’ approach to human rights
A new opinion column argues that Donald Trump treats human rights language the way Humpty Dumpty treated words in 'Through the Looking-Glass' — meaning whatever he chooses it to mean, applied to allies and adversaries selectively. The piece criticises what it sees as an inconsistent and instrumental approach to rights in US foreign policy, prompting debate over whether Washington's human rights commitments still carry credibility abroad.
Why now: Criticism of Trump's perceived inconsistency on human rights is resonating amid ongoing foreign policy debates.
