Microsoft pulls out of Essex AI datacentre over power supply

Original: Microsoft pulls out of AI datacentre project in Essex over power supply concerns

Microsoft has withdrawn from a planned AI datacentre project in Essex, citing power supply concerns. The development, led by UK firm Nscale, had been promoted by government ministers as the largest project of its kind in the country, and Microsoft was its anchor tenant. Its exit raises questions about the UK's ability to power large-scale AI infrastructure and is a setback for the government's AI ambitions.

Why now: The withdrawal is a blow to UK government AI investment plans and highlights grid capacity problems for datacentres.
