Indigenous leaders urge UN action on Amazon criminal networks
Original: Criminal networks threaten the Amazon. Indigenous leaders want the UN to act
Indigenous leaders in the Amazon are calling on the United Nations to respond to the growing presence of criminal networks in the rainforest, saying organized crime is accelerating deforestation, violence and environmental destruction across the region. The appeal is being carried widely across US news outlets, highlighting how trafficking and illegal mining are increasingly seen as a global security and environmental issue rather than a purely local one.
Why now: Criminal activity in the Amazon is escalating, and Indigenous leaders are pressing the UN for international intervention.
