Researchers have developed an open-source system, WiFi-RFiNet, that trains artificial intelligence to identify concealed handguns by analyzing how Wi-Fi signals are disrupted. The approach could enable gun detection without cameras, raising both security applications and privacy concerns. Discussion is centered on the accuracy claims and the broader implications of using everyday wireless signals for surveillance.
Why now: The novel use of ordinary Wi-Fi signals for weapon detection raises fresh security and privacy questions.
