Katie Zacharia is being widely criticised after claiming that China does not even have "proper toilets." The remark spread rapidly on social media, where users pushed back with videos showing modern sanitation and public facilities in Chinese cities. Many accused her of relying on outdated stereotypes about the country, and the claim has become a talking point about how China is portrayed abroad.
Why now: A widely shared claim about China's sanitation is drawing corrections and mockery from users posting contradicting footage.
