US President Donald Trump has proposed that Europe resume purchasing natural gas from Russia, according to the New York Times and reports carried by Adnkronos. Trump reportedly believes the move would also benefit Ukraine and help bring the war with Russia to an end sooner. The proposal is drawing attention given Europe's years-long effort to cut dependence on Russian energy since the invasion of Ukraine.
Why now: The reported proposal contradicts European sanctions policy and could reshape negotiations over the Ukraine war.
