On October 17, 1937, Portuguese communist José Bernardo was deported to the Tarrafal Penal Colony in Cape Verde, becoming one of the first political prisoners held at the concentration camp established by António de Oliveira Salazar's fascist Estado Novo dictatorship. Tarrafal became notorious for the deaths and torture of anti-fascist dissidents, and commemorations of its victims remain a touchstone for labor and left-wing history posts.
