Switzerland will begin issuing identity cards with a biometric chip in early November, aligning with EU travel requirements. The new cards store biometric data and are intended to facilitate travel within the European Union. Non-chipped identity cards will remain available alongside the biometric version, so citizens can choose whether to switch.
Why now: The rollout date is approaching and it affects travel documents many Swiss citizens use for EU trips.
