Simons Foundation commits $15M to help mathematicians adapt to AI
Original: Simons Foundation launches $15M effort to help mathematicians navigate AI era
The Simons Foundation has announced a $15 million initiative to support mathematicians as artificial intelligence reshapes their field. The programme aims to help researchers understand, use and respond to AI tools in mathematical work, and the news is drawing attention and debate among technologists and academics about how funding bodies should respond to AI's growing role in research.
Why now: The large private funding commitment to address AI's impact on a core scientific field is notable amid widespread anxiety and interest about AI's effects on research careers.
