Nearly four million records documenting enslaved people across 20 former British colonies have been made searchable online. The archive allows African-Americans and others to trace ancestors previously lost to fragmented colonial records. Commenters are calling it a major resource for genealogical research and reckonings with the legacy of slavery.
Why now: The launch of a searchable archive of millions of slavery records is a significant new tool for ancestry research and historical accountability.
