Former Arizona senator Kyrsten Sinema is reportedly campaigning for a Republican candidate with anti-trans positions in the midterm elections. Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in December 2022 to become an independent, has increasingly broken with her former allies. LGBT-focused outlets and commentators are highlighting the endorsement as a further sign of her political realignment and a flashpoint for LGBTQ rights advocates ahead of the vote.
Why now: Sinema's split from the Democrats already made her a polarising figure, and backing a candidate seen as hostile to trans rights is drawing fresh criticism from LGBTQ advocates during midterm season.
