The Trump administration is investigating Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota in an effort to revoke her US citizenship, according to reports by the Wall Street Journal and Al Jazeera. The inquiry centers on how Omar obtained citizenship after arriving in the United States, with officials reportedly considering eventual deportation. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, who view it as a politically motivated attack on a prominent Somali-born congresswoman.
Why now: The reported citizenship revocation effort against a sitting member of Congress is an unprecedented and highly contentious political action.
