EU Expands Migration Cooperation With Eastern Libya
The European Union is broadening its migration cooperation with the authorities in eastern Libya, deepening ties with a region long central to efforts to curb irregular migration across the Mediterranean. The move is likely to draw scrutiny from human rights groups, who have repeatedly criticised EU support for Libyan forces accused of abuse against migrants and refugees held in detention camps.
Why now: The EU's cooperation with Libyan forces on migration is controversial given documented human rights concerns, prompting public debate.
