Ben Lerner's novel Transcription is being discussed because of its cover art, which readers say evokes HAL 9000, the sentient computer from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The observation is circulating among book fans online, with readers joking about the resemblance between the jacket design and the film's infamous red camera-eye.

Why now: Readers are amused by an unexpected visual resemblance between a contemporary literary novel's cover and an iconic sci-fi film image.
