Loud explosion-like booms were heard across Chiba Prefecture during a joint Japan-US military exercise, frightening residents who reported thinking a meteor had fallen. The Self-Defense Forces activity, apparently tied to the drill, sparked criticism that advance notice to local communities was inadequate, with residents demanding clearer warnings of exercises causing such noise.
Why now: Residents were startled by unannounced loud noises from the Japan-US joint military drill and are criticizing the lack of advance warning.
