UN warns of looming food crisis as Hormuz fertiliser plan stalls
Original: UN official warns of looming food crisis as Hormuz fertiliser plan stalls The disruption has hit global supplies of urea
A UN official is warning of a looming global food crisis after a plan to keep fertiliser shipments moving through the Strait of Hormuz stalled. The disruption has hit global supplies of urea, the world's most widely used nitrogen fertiliser, as well as seaborne sulphur, a key input. Before the war, roughly a third of global urea shipments passed through the region, raising fears of price spikes and reduced crop yields worldwide.
Why now: Disruption to Strait of Hormuz shipping is squeezing global fertiliser supplies, raising fears of food price inflation.
