New research highlighted by campaigners shows urban tree cover delivers cooling benefits mainly to wealthier cities and neighbourhoods, while poorer towns remain hotter with far less shade. Campaigners stress that planting trees alone cannot solve the problem, arguing that real relief requires ending fossil fuel use and addressing climate inequality as a human rights issue.
