China Sanctions Paraguayan and Belizean Ministers over Taiwan Ties
Original: China Sanctions Ministers from Paraguay and Belize over Taiwan Diplomacy; Paraguayan Minister Cal...
China has imposed sanctions on government ministers from Paraguay and Belize over their countries' diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Paraguay's minister has reportedly called the move out, and the dispute is drawing attention to Beijing's ongoing pressure campaign against the small number of states that still recognise Taipei. Both Latin American and Caribbean nations have maintained formal ties with Taiwan despite Chinese objections.
Why now: Beijing rarely sanctions officials from countries with Taiwan ties, making this an unusually aggressive escalation in the diplomacy dispute.
