Researchers are applying artificial intelligence to the task of decoding cuneiform, the ancient Mesopotamian writing system, and commenters are calling the development exciting on mathematical grounds. Better decoding of cuneiform, the argument goes, deepens understanding of how early counting and record-keeping worked — knowledge some describe as a real foundation for modern AI and superintelligence research.
Why now: New AI methods are being linked to unlocking ancient cuneiform texts, sparking discussion about AI's broader potential.
