NASA has appointed astronaut Christina Koch as the agency's acting deputy chief engineer, effective Sunday, November 1. She takes over following the retirement of Katherine Van Hooser, who is stepping down after more than 35 years with the agency. Koch, known for record-setting spaceflight missions, will now take on a senior technical leadership role at NASA while remaining part of the astronaut corps.
Why now: The move pairs one of NASA's most prominent astronauts with a key engineering leadership post during a period of transition at the agency.
