Tlaib bill would bar federal funding for automated surveillance tech
Original: Tlaib unveils bill to prohibit use of federal funding for Flock, other automated surveillance tech
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan has introduced legislation that would prohibit the use of federal funding for Flock Safety and other automated surveillance technologies. The bill targets tools such as automated license plate readers that have spread rapidly among US police departments. It sets up a clash over how much federal money should support mass data-gathering systems used in local law enforcement.
Why now: Growing public debate over the spread of Flock cameras and automated surveillance has put the issue on the legislative agenda.
